Germany/Munich, April 26, 2012 – The 3rd Baumeister student competition − a cooperation of Baumeister, a magazine for architecture, and Nemetschek Allplan, a leading international provider of BIM solutions, has been decided. Under the motto “In the corner!” this year’s competition called for solutions for corner buildings. The first award which includes prize money of € 1,250 Euro went to Johannes Buchhammer from the University of Stuttgart. His design managed to beat 20 other designs and convince the jury from the fields of science and industry. All designs will be displayed until early May at Nemetschek Headquarters in Munich.

“Allplan is now one of the leading BIM solutions in Germany. By supporting this competition, we want to inspire students with our solutions and at the same time, give participants in the competition a chance to prepare for entry into professional life” said Peter Mehlstäubler, CEO of Nemetschek Allplan GmbH.

A total of 89 students from five different German universities took on the challenge of developing a corner building between two “neighbors” that were difficult to reconcile – in other words, buildings from different eras with different heights, stories, designs, façades and uses. The task was to find a worthwhile property, to suggest a use and finally to fill the existing or intended gap with a new design.

After an internal pre-selection at the universities, 21 works were submitted to the competition. The jury was amazed at how many weaknesses in urban planning the students identified in Cologne, Berlin or Stuttgart in the course of their work and what alternative ideas they devised for the development of those sites.

The Baumeister student competition is planning its next round for 2013. The topic will be agreed in advance – hopefully with even more participating universities. The best works – regardless of semester and recognition at the university – may be re-submitted to the editors.
