Munich, 6. October 2010 - In cooperation with Nemetschek Allplan, the architecture journal Baumeister is once again seeking solutions for urban gap sites in a student competition. The participants will be supported in planning their designs with free Allplan software student licenses.

To the left a Gründerzeit façade, to the right an office building of the 1960s - what can be done? Gap sites in cities need creative and sustainable answers. Under the motto "back to the city - building in the gap", students from eight schools of architecture will be accepting the challenge as part of their semester program and will design "gap fillers" for mixed urban use.

Like last year, Nemetschek Allplan is again supporting the competition with monetary prizes. In addition, students can download Allplan CAD software from the Allplan Campus online portal free of charge and make use of numerous e-learning tools and helpful documentation.

Beside architectural and urban planning creativity, the sustainability of the concepts in the categories resource efficiency, energy and ecology will be assessed as well. Work is expected to be appropriate to the locality and tasks - the choice of the precise measures is, however, left to the participants.

Sustainability is sought after
Dr. Wolfgang Bachmann, Chief Editor Baumeister: "We are looking for sustainability not only in relation to the finished design, but also in the construction process itself. The approach does not necessarily have to be currently realistic, because what is still utopia today may be common practice tomorrow. Perhaps it is the reuse of old bricks to save on primary energy or the delivery of construction material using public transport."

The idea and its implementation in the design will be assessed together with the functional solution, dealing with the requirements of sustainability and the detailing. The jury is composed of representatives of the participating schools, as well as a representative from the editorial team of Baumeister and from Nemetschek Allplan.

Monetary prizes worth a total of 5,250 Euro are being given away. In addition, each participant will receive a student?s subscription for the journal Baumeister for one year. Prize-winning work will be published in one of the Summer 2011 issues of Baumeister and also as a Baumeister special edition.

"The promotion of young talent is important to us", says Peter Mehlstäubler, General Manager of Nemetschek Allplan. "That is why we are delighted to hold this competition again this year together with the Baumeister publishing house."
